We are happy to announce our new video communication app TalkTime. The app lets you start a video conference with your Slack team member just like that. No additional software is required.No browser plugins are required. No
additional registrations are required and as expected. The video chat is compatible with the latest
versions of major browsers like Mozilla FireFox and Google Chrome (IE is
not supported). <br />
<br />
With our integration with Slack, we bring to you the complete
communication solution. Slack's powerful communication features
complimented by our video conference options provide for a communication
suite like no other. Here is how it works:<br />
<br />
Fire up Talktime from within Slack using the simple command <b>/talktime </b><b><br /></b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<b></b>The '<b>Click here</b>' link will fire up Talktime from within Slack by opening up a Talktime room. <br />
<br />
<b>Start Room</b> in the next screen can start the session and fire up your Webcam. All that is left is to wait for your friends to join the room. Your friends can join the room by clicking on the links shared with <br />
them through Slack. Once they join the room, you can start Catching up! <br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
We are happy to announce the availability of <b>Techniq Meeting</b>, a simple, easy to use, online web conferencing tool. Participants can use webcams to see each other and their headsets to speak via VOIP. </div>

The presenter needs to install Java in order to screen share. Other than this no installs are required. The presenter can however, share docs, ppts etc. during the presentation rather easily.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
The presenter can also record the session. For now, we allow up to 10 attendees per session. Registrants can manage their contacts and easily invite other attendees from their contacts.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
With the growth of online applications integrations between systems have become increasingly critical. We receive several requests for customization as would most software providers. We add these features on an ongoing basis depending on urgency and value to the overall system. The good news is that as long as new features are on "our platform" we have the flexibility to do what it takes to design and implement pretty much any feature. We also provide open APIs to our system so if any other application providers wish to integrate with our platform we provide them all the support they need. However, when customers want us to integrating our platform with other solutions it is important that other systems provide open APIs for us to integrate. When not available, we have to jump through hoops and develop workarounds.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Recently, we had a prospect who had a need to integrate our platform with Live Meeting. Unfortunately, live meeting APIs don't lend themselves to integration with other web apps. After discussions with the customer we devised a workable solutions. The end-user can register for a Live Meeting session or a Live Meeting series from our platform and get access to a link. On clicking this link the user is taken to a Live Meeting site where the user can join a live session after registration/logging in. This step is a manual process because APIs are unavailable. The Admin can generate reports about registrations for these live session from our platform. We also added the ability for the end user to pay for these registrations using credit cards.<br />
<br />
The Admin can also generate payment reports for these sessions. Then, we extended the Live Sessions feature to Live Series --essentially a grouping of live sessions along with the associated reports. Unfortunately, this is the best we could provide given that the APIs simply aren't available for us to do more. Nevertheless, we have happy customer with a solution that works! We'll admit, its not perfect, but it works.</div>

We are excited to announce that the Techniq University is now seamlessly integrated with Adobe's Adobe Connect service (in addition to Cisco WebEx and Citrix GoTo products). The Techniq Online University acts as the front-end to the end-user while communicating with Adobe Connect at the backend. This is completely transparent to the end-user.<br />

<span style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; display: inline !important; float: none; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8000001907349px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 1; word-spacing: 0px;">An Admin will be able to schedule the session from within the system. Once it is scheduled then the registered user on our platform can sign up for a Adobe Training session and later join the session at the time of the session from the Techniq Online University.</span><br />
<br style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8000001907349px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 1; word-spacing: 0px;" />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One big difference that often goes unnoticed between shrink wrapped software and the ubiquitous software as a service (SAAS) products is the significant difference in customer interaction between the software provider and the user. In the former case, once the product is sold the amount of customer support is likely to decrease dramatically over time. When was the last time you called MS for support for MS Office?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the SaaS business however it is an ongoing, dynamic relationship with the end-user because at some level what you are selling or what someone is buying is software packaged as a service. Implicitly users are more inclined to ask for support, and for new features. And very often we as vendors tend to turnaround and quickly address their feature requests. There is constant rich exchange of ideas that can trigger some real innovation and creativity.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Over the years, it has been interesting to observe various user types -- how people work with software, how they react, etc. In fact, its very revealing of human natures and tendencies and their variations. Perhaps an ideal space for a scientist who study human behavior!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We thought we should share our observations with you. Here are a few.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<b></b><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><b>The Enthusiastic</b></b></div>
<b>
</b>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Always eager to get more and more features. The "Can we modify this flow so that it becomes easier?" Can we add some enhancements here?" type. Best to work with if you have a good rapport with them. Extremely useful for improving your system. They will literally shake up your system for the good.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<b></b><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><b>The Curious</b></b></div>
<b>
</b>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Someone who is always exploring untouched areas of the system. As the saying goes, curiosity kill the cat. Too much wandering, that too ignoring the clear cut danger signs, have often ended us in trouble (things like what happens if I click this "delete" button here? Oops!)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<b></b><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><b>The Complaining</b></b></div>
<b>
</b>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You guessed right. The toughest kid in the block. In most cases these will be someone who is familiar with a different but similar system before and therefore is hell-bent on changing our system so that it looks like the other one. Some has even asked for features that has absolutely no relevance to our system (think something like asking for a social sharing button in a private chat room) ... but then again we are trained to give them what they want whether they use it or not :)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<b></b><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><b>The Vanishing Type</b></b></div>
<b>
</b>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is a special category that deserves a mention. They are eager to understand the system, they understand what we say, they are happy with everything but guess what? They ask for a whole host of customization after frequent back and forth.They vanish a week before we plan the deployment (in majority of cases because of delays in getting some paper work done). Some re-appear after a couple of months with the same enthusiasm to start it all over again!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are still many more customer types out there but we will reveal them slowly. And if any of our existing customers are reading this article please understand that this is NOT about you! ... :)</div>

Silicon valley is home to some of the richest and most innovative companies on the planet. Yet, the benefit of having them in our neck of the woods hasn't really helped the school system around these parts. I heard through the grapevine that Microsoft has done a phenomenal job helping schools in Seattle -- the quality of teachers and the facilities at the schools there are way ahead of Bay Area schools.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am not suggesting that these major companies pour funds into schools (though that makes a lot of sense!). Even on the education innovation front, there has been very little, apart from Khan Academy, Coursera and others similar services. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was pleasantly <a href="http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Inside-AltSchool-a-Network-of-Micro-Schools-Founded-by-a-Former-Googler-295275341.html" target="_blank">surprised to read about AltSchool</a> which is exploring a new, fundamentally different approach to K-12 education. This appears to be a refreshing change from the routine run of the mill education that is being served at the public schools and the more affordable "assembly line" style private schools in the area. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I don't mean to say that there aren't good schools here. I just think the big bucks, the great technologists, and everything else that this region has at its disposal have not come together to take a serious, fresh look at what can be key to the future of this country and perhaps the world at large. The folks at AltSchool deserve special kudos for taking on this long overdue challenge.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With the growth of the Internet, computers, online video, online meetings, mobile technology, etc., there simply should be a lot more happening on the education front in the world's innovation capital. Let's hope Altschool is the first of many more such efforts.</div>

<div dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 1; word-spacing: 0px;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="im" style="color: #500050;">Every course ought to be an interactive learning experience. E-learning has always been one step behind the traditional classroom based learning in this respect. Rather than just act as a course delivery mechanism, the class room based training allowed for active interactions with the teachers and just as importantly, with fellow learners. The e-learning industry has always sought to close this gap. While virtual training sessions like GoTo services from Citrix and the WebEx products have always engaged the participants, self paced course delivery was still lacking the interactive environment.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
We have done our fair share to address this issue. Our platform utilizes a course specific comment system so that users can write their feedback on courses and read other users feedback. We also have a discussion forum where users can engage in active discussions on a course. In this model, all users who are signed up for a course can get together in the discussion forum and engage in active discussions on various aspects of the course - all without leaving the system. Along with our course resource, related video, related links features, these interactive features like the comment system and discussion forum provide an interactive learning experience.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><br />
<br />
Taking this one step further, we have implemented a course based video sharing system. Using this feature, users registered for a course can take part in a video conference/chat to discuss the course. This negates the need for the Admin to create a separate virtual training session for the same purpose. Users can access the virtual video system from the "Details" page for a course itself. Once the feature is released, Admins will be able to invite single or multiple users to a video chat, share files and discuss the self paced course in detail.<br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This feature can be utilized for a wide range of purposes, ranging from a Q&A with all the users registered for a course, to conducting a one on one with a single user in case the user needs special attention and guidance. The optional file sharing option will help users share notes while multiple users in the same video chat can simulate the class room environment by conducting a live group discussion. We hope the interactive course based video conference will help our customers achieve an immersive learning experience. Stay tuned!<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I had an interesting conversation with one of my customers recently. While discussing a particular support issue she was complaining that people kept calling despite the instructions being very explicit. I said, "Have you added it to the course description?" to which she replied, "You bet I have. But that's not the issue. The truth is nobody reads!"</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My customer had actually honed in on a serious problem that has become more and more apparent with the advent of the Internet. There was a time when when blogs were widely read. These days even that seems to have stopped. Readers simply write TLDR instead - "Too Long Didn't Read"<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In fact, there is a Chrome plugin named TLDR which will summarize an article for you into various sizes!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
From a technical standpoint, designing a user interface that makes it easy to navigate (without the need to read elaborate instructions) even for the least tech savvy user is a huge challenge. Even when you post an alert on the screen in red text users don't read and prefer to call customer support, leading to huge waste of time and energy for everyone involved. Huge amounts of FAQs, Wikis etc are generated everyday, but the reality is that users just don't have the patience to look through them. It is not surprising when the average <a href="http://www.anagard.com/blog/2013/12/04/user-attention-span-on-the-internet-contracting/" target="_blank">attention time span</a> on a website page is less than 6 secs. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As we move further towards a hyper-connected world filled with mobile devices the attention span is likely to further plummet (especially given the small screen on phones). The challenge to counter this on all fronts is going to be hard no matter what!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
p.s: I'll keep this brief lest it ends up in the TLDR category :-)</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
We are glad to announce the introduction of a whole new video chat facility. We have integrated WebRTC, a free, open project which enables crystal clear audio and a rich video experience.The WebRTC integration now allows users in the system to chat among themselves and to the Admins. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In this day and age of real time social interaction, with the video chat along with social media integration, comment system and the discussion forums, our system is now equipped with every kind of interaction options a user might need. Imagine a situation where a learner might have a doubt regarding the course content. Right now they have to rely on comments and/or emails to raise the question and then wait to hear back from the Admin. But with this new facility in place they can always initiate a chat with an Admin in a new window and get it clarified then and there itself. They can also interact with fellow students to share useful information. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is not just the learners that can benefit from this. The video chat also allows the Admins to reach out to certain students in real time. We are certain that this can improve the overall efficiency of your workflow. And as you can imagine, end user support becomes much more efficient if you can speak directly to the client in real time. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With the webrtc integration, the only requirement for you to start a video chat is to be logged into the system. No additional software is required.No browser plugins are required. No additional registrations are required and as expected, you can change your status to not available or busy just in case you want to work without distractions. The video chat is compatible with the latest versions of major browsers like Mozilla FireFox and Google Chrome (IE is not supported). Since the video chat is enabled only for the users in the system, spammers will be kept out of the chat facility. If you haven't already signed up to our system, please do so now, switch ON your camera and let us know how much do you like the all new, rich, hassle free real time video chat experience. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
These days, especially in the world of web-based applications the
trend seems to be to release a product first and incrementally fix
bugs. Many such applications are free (follow the freemium model) and
the early end-users (or early adopters) are often the free beta
testers (or guinea pigs). In the race to launch a software product
companies are often faced with the dilemma of where to make
compromises. This decision becomes that much harder when not meeting a
deadline could be the "kiss of death." This means that very often
developers gravitate towards meeting the deadline but knowing fully
well that the software being released has bugs buried in it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The reality is that in the web-based application (SAAS) business
fixing bugs and updating the software is relatively trivial in
comparison to shrink-wrapped software. As a result in many cases even
before the end user gets down to accessing the system several bugs
could be fixed! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We have an interesting anecdote in this regard to narrate. A customer
required a specific set of features to be developed. After discussions
it was agreed hat the effort will take us about two months. However,
for various reason we started to slip on the target dates. We reached a
point where it was becoming apparent to us that we could deliver but
with some known bugs. The reality is that it could take a while before
the customer and or their end-users would identify the bugs. So the
question was, should we release or ask for more time despite knowing
that this project was time-sensitive to the customer? We believed that
"discretion is the better part of valor" and so we were preparing to
prep the customer about the exact situation and sharing the known bugs
well in advance of the deadline.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thankfully, the customer came back and asked us to postpone the
release (because of delays at their end) and we survived with time to
spare. The product was released within the newly set deadline and the
customer was happy as ever. Clearly lady luck was smiling on us in
this case! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But it might not be true every single time. So that brings us back to
where we started - the tradeoff between time and quality. If you are
scratching your head, don't worry, its a topic of research. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
In <a href="http://blog.vitalect.com/2014/03/the-curious-case-of-videos_27.html">one of our earlier posts</a>, we had talked about the importance and significance of videos. It has become increasingly clear that the future of the eLearning industry will be ruled by videos among other things (like gamification, tincan etc). While adopting videos as your primary course delivery mechanism has some obvious advantages as discussed in that post, you are likely to run across some issues if you don't choose wisely. One such issue is beautifully illustrated in <a href="http://blog.vitalect.com/2014/09/caught-in-eternal-browser-wars_16.html">this post</a>. </div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As Steve Jobs <a href="https://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/">predicted in 2010</a>, flash is on the way out, being replaced by HTML5. For a browser to play videos in flash, the browser should support flash, the flash player plugin should be installed, and the flash version should be compatible with the browser version. In short, there is no standard. Before deciding to use flash as your primary video delivery mechanism, it would be a worthwhile exercise to make sure that your customers use flash supported devices, or be ready to be bombarded with flash related support queries. If you still prefer flash (due to encryption and DRM reasons), <a href="http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html">this flash help</a> will come in handy to let your customers check if their browser supports flash, to install and to update the flash plugin. </div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, even if you are choosing HTML5 as you video delivery medium, that's no reason to rest easy. You still have to do your research. What HTML5 does, and flash lacks, is providing a web standard for playing videos. HTML5 uses semantic markup, so for starters, your browser should support the HTML5 video tag. The video element (<video>) helps you to play videos in the browser without the help of any plugins. You can check whether your browser supports the video tag <a href="http://caniuse.com/#feat=video">here</a>. You don't have to worry too much here, barring some old browser versions, all the major browsers support the HTML5 video now. With flash, you don't have IOS or MAC support, with HTML5 you have cross platform support guaranteed. So generally, we recommend HTML5 to our customers. However, as mentioned earlier, if you have a specific requirement like DRM or encryption, you can still choose flash. Our course building tool Techniq Portfolio is equipped to deal with both flash and HTML5 scenarios.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Please note that choosing HTML5 is only job half done. HTML5 only specifies a web standard to embed your video (using the video tag) on the web (as against converting your video to the proprietary flash format). You still have to determine which video format to use. Choosing the preferred video format is another gigantic task. Everyone have their preferred video file formats, not all of them render properly on a browser. Our system is equipped to handle all the major video and file formats out there. MP4s are the most preferred formats out there, but there is more to the picture than that. </div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While choosing a video for the web, you have to look at two things. 1. the filetype or format - like mp4, flv, avi etc. 2. the video format - in other words the codec or the compression format used. Some examples include MPEG-4, H.264, VP6, VC-1 etc.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So in short, just saying MP4 is not enough, you have to specify the codec used as well. For example, MP4 with H.264 codec might work on a browser but the same MP4 with MPEG-4 codec might not work on the same browser (H.264 is just one type of MPEG-4, but we don't have to go into the details). Long story short, the video format we prefer is MP4 with H.264 codec (which is supported by most modern browsers). We strive to provide the best user experience to our customers and minimize support calls to save time (most importantly that of our customers). But '<a href="http://blog.vitalect.com/2014/09/caught-in-eternal-browser-wars_16.html">caught in the eternal browser wars</a>', we stumble (mostly due to no fault of ours), but the 'video demon' can be tamed with the help of informed customers and a helpful support documentation.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
During the cold war days the British used to joke that should America and Russia go to war all the bombs will be thrown on Europe. If you are in the business of online web application development this is exactly how you would feel in the midst of the never ending browser wars.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome are the three most commonly used browsers (apart from various mobile browsers, Opera etc.) eternally fighting for market share. Every few months a new version of a browser is released. Besides, every few weeks these browsers undergo some fix or the other. To complicate things the ubiquitous Flash plugin (which is on its way out as a technology) gets frequent updates too. E-learning content often uses flash and invariably something breaks. That's when the story begins.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The poor end-user who often pays for online content sits staring at the monitor expecting something to play in his browser. All he gets is a blank screen. Frustration creeps in and out goes the support email: "Fix it or give me my money back". The client forwards the same to the vendor and it goes to the application developer who has to sort it out like a puzzle from another planet. What are his issues? Well here's a start:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Say, the course material has MP4 content in one page and an MOV or a WMV in another. Not all browsers handle these formats without the appropriate plugins. MP4 and MOV plays with Quicktime player (provided they are H.264 compatible), but WMV requires the WMV player. So the problem at hand is that "Video is not playing in the system".</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He begins his job. Tirelessly goes through the fixes and everything seems to go in the right direction and hello! Here comes another case: A Mac user with a WMV content is experiencing the same issue! (for those who are wondering what's wrong with that, WMV does not play on Mac without an external plugin). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
OK, so our tech-guy fixes up the whole thing in his own style (by using custom players within the system and the like) and transfers the whole thing to the testers (translates into: <i>thank god, it's out of my way!</i>). The tester who has become sort of a human octopus (with 8 different browsers all around him, 5 of them being multiple versions of IE; Yes, the great IE6 included.) goes through rigorous testing and give a thumbs up. The fix goes live. The boss is happy. The client is happy. The end user who... well, still gets a blank screen in his browser. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The whole issue re-starts. It's back to square one. The only difference is that the overall frustration levels of all the parties involved has gone up a notch. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Extensive research by the developers (read "Google") finally reveals the truth. The particular browser, IE, has a compatibility mode, which is like a switch, used to play 'non-playable' (?) content in a website. The end-user has to turn ON that switch in order play the content. Problem solved.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Suggesting these plugins and/or to play with the browser settings to an end user (who is an anxious non tech savvy person in most cases), is not easy. Besides, end-users don't expect anyone to have make changes to settings on their computer, they just expect it things to work magically from the get-go. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Interestingly, for some reason, the other browser's don't seem to find any use for such a switch. They do not mind playing this 'non-playable' content at all. A much scarier thought that is bugging us right now is if other browsers would introduce this feature just to compete with IE!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So for now our end user is happy, thanks to the compatibility mode in his browser, and no thanks to the developer and support team who needlessly spent hours troubleshooting the issue.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But of course, the issue could happen again for another end user who has not yet turned ON the switch in his browser. So the issue isn't completely out of the way yet.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, what happened to our developer? At the moment the guy is breaking his head to figure out a way to keep this switch ON all the time for end users! He is the real victim of the browser wars!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<br />
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: black; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;">

<br />
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Right
now, with social media trending at lightning speed everywhere, the
following question might sound a bit naive at first, but do you think a
Chat client is an absolute necessity in a self-paced e-learning
environment? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We understand that it makes sense to have a chat ability during live
virtual sessions especially if the users involved belongs to a
particular company or group or are discussing a common topic. Companies
already use systems like Podio, Chatter, Yammer to communicate among themselves. Does adding one more chat facility in the actual training management system add more value? Or does it create one more forum where important exchanges are lost? </div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The question is would it work in self-paced customer training where total strangers might be registering for courses that they can complete at their convenience? The greatest risk here is that if customers start bad-mouthing the course material or the training in general for some reason then it could have a negative impact. And then there's the question that whether end-users would prefer chatting in a professional environment with total strangers? </div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Of course, there is a more positive side to it. Constructive customer discussions can lead to an overall improvement of the training quality as well.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One thing that we know for sure is that a well working chat facility
can be wonderful for customer support. Users can, at any time, chat
with an Instructor or an Admin who's online at that given time to
inquire about the course materials and/or other doubts relating to it.
It makes life so much easier. No more waiting for emails from the contact
person. </div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And then there is a question when it comes to selling courses online. Would you as an end user, prefer asking the opinion of an unknown person regarding a course material before purchasing it? We do
provide course related forums to encourage discussions and reviews
regarding course contents. Do you think that having a one-to-one chat can add more value to it?</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Implementing a chat system is not difficult. In fact, its quite common place these days. There are any number of chat system already available with APIs and other functions to integrate with. But we are unsure about the value that it provides. Anecdotal feedback shows us that chat is of limited value in a self paced learning environment unless subject matter experts have scheduled hours when they are available. But in such circumstances, a full fledged virtual session via Webex or Citrix Online makes more sense instead of a simple chat facility. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We'd love to hear your thoughts as always. </div>
</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There is a common saying, "If it ain't broken, don't fix it." When it comes to courses, most training teams prefer to follow this theory. That is, courses that have been in use for a long time are seldom re-visited. They are in use and there are no complaints, so why bother? This is understandable given that we are all hard pressed for time in this day and age of information overload and hyper-connectivity. But the reality is that technology evolves and there are always means to improve how courses are packaged and presented.<br />
<br />
For our part, as the provider of the technology platform, sometimes we are way too focussed on what else can be added to the product that we forget
how it was like in the past and how the long-time users of our system might still be
using the legacy "brick and mortar" features. We experienced
something similar when we were going to move a long-time client over to our newer
platform. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They were using series courses (a collection of courses) to
accomplish employee certifications. Most of the series courses were
having a considerably large number of sub courses (modules). Some were having as
much as 40 odd sub courses. As an end user, you are supposed to go
through each and every sub course, in sequence and then take a quiz at
the end of it all in order to achieve your certification. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Can you imagine yourself taking all those 40 courses and not getting
certified at the end? Actually that would be reality if you take those
courses in a random order (and not in a sequence). You would be asked to
take the test again since it should be the last thing to do in order to
consider the series as 'completed'.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Times had changed (on our side) and this process was simplified in our latest
product versions. But we never knew someone was still following this old
suit until we saw it ourselves. We felt that a helping hand was
necessary and we suggested an improvement and they absolutely loved it!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What we first did was to go through their sub course contents and
find out how we can unify those contents so as to reduce the overall
course count. We found that most of these sub courses had simple PDFs
and documents as their content and many of them had YouTube videos as
contents.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So we used our course developing tool - Techniq Portfolio to
assemble the contents within all those 40 subcourses - that would be
PDFs, PPTs, Docs, Videos, YouTube Videos etc. and create one solid
single course, with 40 pages in it and a quiz at the end, that too
created with TP. The result? They no longer need to use even the concept
of series to accomplish their goal. Now their employees have to take
only one single course in one shot to get certifications.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Wait a minute. Did I mention that we could even put timers to
individual pages so as to restrict users from moving on to other pages
without spending sufficient time on the current page? In short, the course was cut down,
the effort was cut down. We got a happy client and above all we were
satisfied to see first hand our product's evolution coming in handy for someone.<br />
<br />
If you are course developer or training in-charge do re-visit your old courses, you might make your end-users experience a lot better!</div>
